Around the Block
Mount Airy
Artists, professionals, and families of all kinds join to form this progressive community.
Founded in 1750 by William Allen, a prominent merchant and Chief Justice of the Province of Pennsylvania, Mount Airy was once part of the 15,000 acres sold to German settlers by William Penn. Throughout the Revolutionary and Civil Wars, the region served as a site for the country’s fight for freedom, housing runaway slaves and hosting numerous battles for independence. With its consolidation into the city of Philadelphia in 1854, Mount Airy began to evolve into the haven for diversity that it is today. Its reputation as one of the most racially diverse neighborhoods in the country solidified when Civil Rights leaders in the 1960s collaborated with real estate professionals to intentionally integrate the community.
